Parkhead to Gain More Spaces for People to Support Physical Distancing

Published: 22 July 2020

Work starts in Parkhead today to temporarily widen footways on both sides of Westmuir Street (between Gallowgate and Crail Street) as part of our Spaces for People programme, which is providing extra space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of COVID-19.

Details

On-street parking will be suspended in the affected areas, with extra space for people made available by repurposing the immediate road space usually occupied by parked vehicles.

Additional footway widening work identified in the areas shown in the map below, is subject to the progress of ongoing utility work on Westmuir Street at its junction with Tollcross Road.

Spaces for People

Supported by £3.5m funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People will see temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.

Short-term measures across our city centres and neighbourhoods will see footways widened at pinch points to ease pedestrian movement and make it easier to access businesses, community facilities and public transport hubs. Consideration will also be given to the positioning of temporary strategic cycling routes to highlight cycling as an attractive, viable and long term commuting choice.

Work will commence today (21 July 2020), and is due for completion on Wednesday 29 July 2020. This temporary infrastructure is expected to be in place for a minimum period of 10 weeks, and reviewed in line with the Scottish Government's COVID-19: Framework for Decision Making - Scotland's Route Map through and out of the crisis.

Update: 15 December 2020

Spaces for People infrastructure is temporary and as such, agile. Measures can be mobilised relatively quickly as the need arises, and adjustments made to existing infrastructure after a period of review.

Following a monitoring period at this location, the temporary infrastructure has been removed.
