City Centre - New Parking and Loading Restrictions on Sunday

Our Local Transport Strategy sets out the Council's aspirations for taking forward transport policy and infrastructure within Glasgow.

Due to the lack of parking availability on a Sunday within the City Centre, it is considered necessary to extend a number of existing waiting, loading and parking restrictions to include Sunday.

What restrictions are being introduced?

A number of restrictions are being introduced:

  • A payment or permit will be required when parking in a marked parking bay in the city centre on a Sunday during 8am - 6pm, as it is at present during Monday - Saturday.
  • The introduction of cashless parking payments and paperless virtual resident parking permits.
  • To facilitate taxi provision in the City Centre certain taxi ranks will be extended or introduced as part of this proposed order.
  • Following development works at Strathclyde Sports Facility, the temporary restrictions currently in place on St James Road will become permanent as part of this proposed order.

Why are we introducing new restrictions?

Increasing on-road parking availability on a Sunday should improve traffic flow within the City Centre and have a positive effect on environmental issues such as air quality by encouraging the use of more sustainable methods of transport. These proposals should also encourage the use of off-street parking options if driving into the City Centre and likely reduce any time spent driving around the City Centre roads for those looking for an available on-street parking space.

When will the new restrictions start?

The new restrictions will come into operation on Monday 24 June. Sunday 30 June will be the first Sunday where parking charges will apply.

A failure to comply with the new restrictions means you will be liable for enforcement action.

How can I apply for a Residents Parking Permit?

Resident parking permit application forms and guidance are available online on our Apply for a Parking Zone Permit page.

There are no visitor or business permits available for the City Centre.
