Please note that from 1 January 2024 the Topographical Test will no longer be sat in person, in writing within the City Chambers. The Topographical Test will now be sat in person, on the computer at Brooke Street Training Centre. Applicants will be advised of a test date and time by the Licensing Authority once a valid application has been received and the application fee has been paid.

Any individual who intends to apply for a Taxi Driver's Licence* must first sit and pass the Council's Topographical Test of Knowledge.

The test aims to ensure that all Taxi Drivers have a knowledge of the City including the layout of its roads and the location of landmarks.

*If you have previously held a Taxi Driver's Licence with this Licensing Authority, a further topographical test would only be required where there has been a period of 10 consecutive years or more since the expiry of your last Taxi Driver's Licence with this Licensing Authority.
