Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra


Glasgow Schools' Symphony Orchestra provides Young People from across Glasgow schools and beyond a unique opportunity to experience professional orchestral training, repertoire and performance delivered by our team of highly talented staff.

Information for Applicants and Parents/Guardians

The Course consists of a programme made up of a series of non-residential rehearsals,
a residential week, follow-up rehearsals, and concerts in December, March and June.

The Summer Residential Course

Will be held at Ardentinny Residential Education Centre from Saturday 22 June to Thursday 27 June 2019, conducted by Bernard Docherty, tutors Violin1-Rachael Smart, Violin 2-Emma Pantel, Viola-Pamela Black, Cello-Fred Parry, Double Bass-Trish Strain, Clarinet- Ali Carberry, Flute- Andrea Kuypers, Oboe- Judith Clarke, Bassoon- Kath Nagl, Horn- John Guerrier, Trumpet- Andy Connell-Smith, Lower Brass-Chris Mansfield, Percussion-Ruth Innes.

The programme includes Borodin Symphony 2, Sibelius Spring Song, Dvorak Carnival Overture and Saint-Saens Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso

Course fees

Will be £285 with a reduced fee of £95 for any pupil in receipt of a clothing grant.

In addition to this there is a Contract to attend all rehearsals form to be printed, signed and brought along to the first rehearsal on Sunday 25 November 2019.  Please note also that a parent should attend on this date to sign the submitted consent forms.  This is a legal requirement and must be signed to allow your child to attend the GSSO Rehearsals and Concerts.

The course and rehearsals will be under the general direction of Pamela Black, supported by a team of Instrumental tutors.


Will be held week beginning 3 November in City Halls, confirmation of times will be sent on receipt of application.

Please be prepared to perform one piece (Grade 4 or above), scales may be requested and sight reading will be given.

Notice of withdrawal

Must be made in emailed to Pamela Black, E.S.O., Instrumental Music Service,  Parents/Carers are advised that when a selected young person withdraws from the course without good reason full payment of the course fee may be demanded.
