Kelvin Hall marks 1st birthday with fun afternoon of free activities

This Saturday (11 November), the Kelvin Hall is hosting a number of free family events to mark the one year anniversary since the official re-opening of the iconic building.

As well as a piper being on-hand to welcome visitors, participants will be able to enjoy everything from family dance and gymnastics taster sessions at the Glasgow Club to dinosaur and bug fun at The Hunterian Collections Study Centre.

The iconic Glasgow landmark has been transformed as part of a £35 million redevelopment as part of a unique partnership between Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow and the National Library of Scotland.

The Kelvin Hall now houses the National Library of Scotland's Moving Image Archive the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum and some Glasgow's civic museums' collection, as well as one of Scotland's biggest health and fitness facilities.

Staff from the Glasgow Club will offer Quidditch classes for aspiring wizards, as well as gymnastics, dance and gym taster sessions for children of all ages. There will also be arts and activity workshops from Ricefield Arts putting recycled materials to good use. The National Library of Scotland's Video Wall will provide the backdrop for 'Birthday Banter', as well as family film screenings in the Learning Room. The Hunterian Collections Study Centre will have rare fossils from the Jurassic age, and bugs and beasties, on display, as well as quizzes and mystery objects to identify.

The afternoon will close with a birthday party to mark the occasion, with a very special visitor from the Glasgow 2018 European Championships to help with the fun.

Volunteers will also lead tours of the building, as well as access to Glasgow Museums' new stores facility, allowing visitors a greater insight into the redevelopment and rebirth of the Kelvin Hall.
