Views are being sought on Glasgow's draft Gaelic Language Plan for 2018- 2022.

A public consultation has been launched on the draft plan which recognises the important contribution of Gaelic to Glasgow's history and outlines how the council aims to continue to create a sustainable future for the language in the city.

Scottish Gaelic is closely related to Irish and Manx Gaelic and has existed in Scotland since at least the 6th Century AD. It was once spoken across almost all of Scotland and was the language of the Royal Court for hundreds of years. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Glasgow and the surrounding areas were predominantly Gaelic speaking but use of the language was later discouraged and its use rapidly declined. In recent times, there has been fresh interest in its revival and Glasgow is now home to more than 10% of people in Scotland who have some Gaelic language skills - the largest number outwith the Western Isles and the Highlands.

This will be Glasgow City Council's third Gaelic Language Plan created within Bòrd na Gàidhlig guidelines. It is built around five priorities :-

  • Provision of Gaelic education and learning in our schools and early years centres
  • Promotion of a positive profile and status for the Gaelic language
  • Fostering higher ambition and standards in our people and services
  • Provision of Gaelic arts in city communities
  • Promotion of the social and economic benefits of Gaelic

Glasgow City Council currently operates three Gaelic nurseries, two primary schools and one secondary school. There are more than 1000 young people aged from three to 18 years in Gaelic Medium Education in the city and, in response to demand, the council is currently in discussions about the creation of another school.

A new Gaelic Arts Strategy has also been launched by Glasgow Life and the Royal National Mod will also take place in Glasgow in 2019 - celebrating Gaelic culture, music and language. An Comunn Gàidhealach's world renowned festival attracts Gaels and non-Gaelic speakers from around the globe and will take place in Glasgow for the first time in 29 years.

Thoiribh Beachd air Dreachd Plana Gàidhlig Ghlaschu

Tha beachdan gan sireadh air dreachd Plana Gàidhlig Ghlaschu 2018 - 2022.

Tha co-chomhairleachadh poblach air fhoillseachadh mun dreachd plana a tha a' tuigsinn mar a tha Gàidhlig air a bhith cudromach ann an cur ri eachdraidh Ghlaschu, agus a' mìneachadh mar a bhios a' chomhairle ag amas air leantainn air adhart a' cruthachadh seasmhachd don chànan sa bhaile san àm ri teachd.

Tha Gàidhlig na h-Alba dlùth ann an dàimh ri Gàidhlig na h-Èireann agus Gàidhlig Eilean Mhanainn, agus tha i air a bhith ga labhairt ann an Alba bhon t-siathamh linn AD. Bha a' Ghàidhlig air a labhairt aig aon àm air feadh cha mhòr Alba air fad, agus b' i a' Ghàidhlig cànan na Cùirte Rìoghail airson ceudan de bhliadhnaichean. Anns an 11mh agus an 12mh linn, bha Glaschu agus sgìrean mu thimcheall Ghlaschu sa mhòr-chuid a' labhairt Gàidhlig, ach às dèidh sin bha cleachdadh air a' chànan air a chumail sìos agus thàinig crìonadh glè luath. Sna bliadhnaichean a dh'fhalbh, tha ùidh air nochdadh às ùr sa Ghàidhlig agus tha Glaschu a-nis na dhachaigh do chòrr air 10% den t-sluagh ann an Alba aig a bheil cuid de sgilean sa Ghàidhlig - an àireamh as motha taobh a-muigh nan Eilean Siar agus na Gàidhealtachd.

Is e seo an treas Plana Gàidhlig aig Comhairle Baile Glaschu, air a chruthachadh taobh a-staigh stiùiridhean Bhòrd na Gàidhlig. Tha e air a thogail mun cuairt air còig prìomhachasan:-

•             Solar foghlaim agus ionnsachaidh Gàidhlig nar sgoiltean agus ionadan tràth- bhliadhnaichean

•             Adhartachadh ìomhaigh agus inbhe dheimhinneach don Ghàidhlig

•             Ag àrach miann-adhartais agus ìrean mathais nas àirde nar daoine agus nar seirbheisean

•             Solarachadh ealain Ghàidhlig ann an coimhearsnachdan a' bhaile

•             Ag adhartachadh buannachdan sòisealta agus eaconamach na Gàidhlig

Tha Comhairle Baile Ghlaschu gu làithreach a' ruith trì sgoiltean-àraich Gàidhlig, dà bhun-sgoil agus aon àrd-sgoil. Tha còrr air 1000 neach òg bho aois a trì gu ochd bliadhna deug ann am Foghlam tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig sa bhaile, agus mar fhreagairt don iarrtas air a shon, tha a' chomhairle gu làithreach ann an còmhraidhean a thaobh sgoil Ghàidhlig eile a chruthachadh.

Tha Ro-innleachd ùr Ealain Ghàidhlig air fhoillseachadh le Glaschu Beò agus bidh am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail a' gabhail àite ann an Glaschu ann an 2019 - a' comharrachadh cànan, ceòl agus cultar na Gàidhlig. Bidh fèis chliùiteach a' Chomuinn Ghàidhealaich a tha aithnichte air feadh an t-saoghail, a' tarraing Ghàidheil agus dhaoine gun Ghàidhlig bho air feadh na cruinne-cè, a' tachairt ann an Glaschu airson a' chiad uair ann an 29 bliadhna.

Feumaidh freagairtean/beachdan a bhith a-staigh ro 1 Gearran 2018.
