June 2021

30 June - Keep safe this summer

Summer Safety Measures

Look out for the Scottish Government advertising 'Summer Safety Measures'campaign - running on TV, radio, and social media until 18 July.

The aim of the campaign is to remind us of the importance of good safety behaviours such as ventilation and outdoor socialising.Continuing to follow these behaviours until we are all vaccinated will help us avoid future outbreaks and minimise the risks from new strains.

The five key safety measures highlighted as part of the campaign include:

  • Ventilation
  • meeting outdoors where possible
  • importance of cleaning hands
  • avoiding crowds
  • wearing face coverings in crowded places

Play your part - help reduce the risk

We can all make safer choices to help minimise risk - to ourselves and others.

The campaign uses a 'riskometer' to highlight the positive impact of various behaviours and measures that can be taken to help stop the risk of Covid strains spreading.

30 June - Glasgow's Low Emission Zone - public consultation on next stage

Bothwell St - LEZ

A public consultation is now open on the next phase of Glasgow's Low Emission Zone LEZ) which from June 2023 will apply to all vehicles driving into the city centre.

The council introduced Scotland's first ever LEZ in 2018 to address levels of harmful nitrogen dioxide in our city centre caused by road traffic. Our LEZ is intended to protect public health by improving air quality which is of particular benefit to older and very young people and for those with existing heart and lung conditions.

A phased approach has been adopted to give people the chance to prepare. The current LEZ Phase one applies to local service buses only, whereas Phase two will include all vehicles entering the city centre zone unless exempt.

LEZ emission standards, penalty charges and exemptions have all been decided at national level for consistency, however the council can determine the specific shape, size and scope of our LEZ, based on local requirements.

The Phase two scheme design has now been developed, with proposals that include its start date and hours of operation, the area it covers, which vehicle types it applies to and details of grace periods for residents who live in the zone.

Have your say

Let us have your views - the consultation closes on 2 September 2021

You can access the online survey here.

30 June - Streets Ahead Awards 2021 - People Make Glasgow

Streets Ahead

The tenth Glasgow Times 'Streets Ahead Awards', supported by the council, City Building, and other partners, took place 'virtually' on Wednesday 23 June.

City Building's support focusses on working with local communities through their apprentice project initiative, encouraging young City Building employees to be more involved with their local environment and improving their communities.

The awards recognise that, by all working together we can build a better Glasgow. The starting point for the awards was that 'One good citizen can change his or her street for the better - and one good citizen on every street can transform a whole city....'

The awards recognise the work of individuals, groups and organisations around the city.

For a decade, the Glasgow Times campaign has brought neighbours closer together, broken down barriers and reduced isolation, kickstarted vital projects and made Glasgow a greener, brighter, safer and friendlier city.

Over the years, city schools have embraced the initiative with many fantastic examples of great community projects from schools including Sandwood Primary in Penilee, where pupils created a School Travel Plan to tackle the problems of selfish, speeding drivers, untidy streets and poor cycle rack provision, winning support from politicians in Edinburgh, Westminster and Brussels; Govanhill Nursery, who developed a sensory garden for the whole community to enjoy; and Govan High, who ran lunchtime litterpicks in the streets around the school.

Garrowhill Bees Project

Maureen McKenna, Executive Director of Education Services is delighted that St Roch's Primary were the overall winners on the night and said: "The school is a rock to the local community and the award is a fitting legacy to Mary McNulty, the retiring headteacher who's worked so hard for her children and families.

"I visited the school shop - who are the recipients of the award - and the had a great morning with the parents running the project.

"Upcycling and reusing clothes and equipment is a great way to support families and help the climate too."

30 June - Trauma informed workplace - take the GOLD course

Trauma informed practice workplace

It is estimated that 60% of the UK population has experienced psychological trauma in their lifetime (with the figure being even higher for vulnerable groups).Trauma can affect anyone who has lived through one or more traumatic events such as domestic abuse or a sudden bereavement.

To support the Scottish Government's commitment to Scotland becoming 'Trauma Responsive', we have launched a GOLD course which all staff are encouraged to complete.

Robert Anderson, Head of HR said: "Everyone has a role to play in creating opportunities and life chances for people affected by trauma. For some people, living through this pandemic has made living with or recovering from those experiences even harder.

"The GOLD course supports us in becoming a 'trauma informed workplace'. It takes 10 minutes to complete and aims to raise awareness of the scale and impact of psychological trauma and to consider the barriers people affected by trauma can face.

"We all have a responsibility to support the resilience and recovery of those affected by trauma."

30 June - Glasgow Life wins top tourism marketing award

Top tourism marketing award

Glasgow Life's Destination Marketing team and creative agency partners Frame saw off competition from across the country to scoop a coveted tourism award.

The team won gold in the Tourism, Leisure, Culture and Sport category at this year's prestigious Marketing Society Star Awards for the city's domestic tourism campaign, 'Introducing Glasgow'.

Designed to grow Glasgow's reputation as a short-break destination and attract more 'staycation' visitors from across the north of England, the campaign brought the city's identity to life by showcasing our unique Glaswegian character and some of the best things to do in Glasgow.

Post-campaign evaluation revealed Glasgow's position as a spontaneous city break choice increased to 5th in the UK and over a third of those who saw it said they were more actively considering a trip here.

Inspiring visitors from across the UK to visit Glasgow is a priority action within the city's Tourism and Visitor Plan and the team are currently working on activity to support our tourism and hospitality sector, and the city's economic recovery.

30 June - Riverside Museum turns 10

Riverside Museum

Monday 21 June marked 10 years since the Riverside Museum opened to the public.

The popular and much-loved venue has gone from strength-to-strength. Having welcomed 650,000 people through its doors in the first year, annual visitor figures have continued to climb steadily and, pre-COVID, more than 1.3m people enjoyed the museum's exceptional variety of displays, events, activities and festivals; making it one of Scotland's, and the UK's, most popular visitor attractions.

Over the past decade, Riverside has become a real success story for Glasgow and a worthy winner of the European Museum of the Year title in 2013.

Here's what some Glasgow Life staff, based at the museum, said about their favourite object or memory.

Elizabeth Devine, Museum Gallery Assistant, said: "I'm particularly fond of the 1930's street and the Victorian dress shop, aptly named Devine's Gowns and Mantels. As a dressmaker I've made Victorian costumes for the photographer's shop."

John Messner, Curator of Transport and Technology, said: "My favourite thing about the museum is that it brings the history of Glasgow and its people alive. My highlight was the installation of the South African Railways locomotive. It was one of the first objects to go into the building and it's the largest."

Andi Howe, Transport and Technology Conservator, added: "I remember our opening day well. It was made even more special by sharing it with my daughter Eve, who was only three at the time. I have a photo on my desk of that day, which Eve made it into. She's still very proud to say her dad works at Riverside, which means a lot to me."

Michelle Woods, Programming Manager, said: "I love that Riverside is more than a museum. It hosts several popular festivals and indoor and outside events across the year, which bring a really varied mix of people to the museum.

"The whole place takes on a completely different vibe during our Blue Light, Christmas, skateboarding and music festivals. Music events were unknown to museums, we tried it and it was a big success. We've had DJ's inside the museum with thousands of people dancing next to trams, trains and cars. I particularly loved watching the crowd bop about to Candi Stanton when she performed in front of our bike wall."*

14 June - George Square and surrounding Avenues design contract awarded

George Square

John McAslan + Partners have been appointed as lead design consultants for a major public realm scheme focused on George Square.

The commission is for Block C of the council's ambitious Avenues Programme - funded by the Glasgow City Region City Deal and Glasgow City Council - comprising George Square and approximately 2.5km of the surrounding streetscape. The project is the biggest of its kind in the UK.

First laid out in 1781, named after King George III and developed in earnest 20 years later, George Square is Glasgow's principal civic, ceremonial and cultural space, featuring several of the city's best-known landmark buildings.

Jamie Shields, Principal Officer, Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability (NRS) said: "John McAslan + Partners' have been commissioned to reconsider the synergy and balance between George Square and the surrounding streets in relation to contemporary life.  This will involve clarifying the architectural and spatial qualities of the Square and its relationship to the surrounding urban context. The scope of the improvements will include George Street and St Vincent Street as well as John street and Dundas Street.

"The scheme is part of the wider £115m Avenues initiative aimed at improving pedestrian connectivity and priority throughout the city, amid new tree planting, rain gardens, cycleways and improved public transport.

"Sustainability and community are at the heart of the brief with the aim of substantially enhancing the urban environment and opportunities for residents and visitors."

Councillor Susan Aitken, Council Leader said: "The redesign of George Square and the creation of Avenues and other new public realm on neighbouring streets is a crucial part of the regeneration of the city centre.  It is so important as not only will the redesign play a crucial role in the transformation of what is undoubtedly Glasgow's foremost civic space, but it is also a symbol of our vision for the city centre - a place that will be far more attractive to Glaswegians and our visitors, and somewhere that illustrates the economic, environmental and social gains to be made from this project."

Glasgow City region deal

The Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde and the Mackintosh School of Architecture at The Glasgow School of Art are collaborating with John McAslan + Partners through a range of socially and environmentally-led educational initiatives that will embed both students and staff in the design process.

The transformation of George Square and the adjacent streets will commence in the summer of 2023.

John McAslan + Partners have considerable experience of working in Scotland. The practice's current Scottish projects include the refurbishment of the Burrell Renaissance in Glasgow and the National Galleries of Scotland's new Collection Facility in Edinburgh.

More information

The Avenues will be a network of new, attractive, accessible, safe, sustainable and easily-maintained routes throughout the city centre that are people-focused, encourage active travel and are more attractive to residents, workers, visitors and investors. Find out more UK here

The £115 million Avenues programme is a Glasgow City Region City Deal project, funded by the Scottish and UK Governments.  The Glasgow City Region City Deal will see both governments provide £500million of funding for infrastructure projects.

14 June - Tolbooth Steeple becomes Glasgow Climate Clock

Tollbooth Steeple Clock

The historic Tolbooth clock in the Merchant City has been turned into a reminder of the urgency of the climate crisis. A countdown projection shows the percentage of world energy creation that is renewable and the amount of time estimated to be left to prevent a 1.5-degree increase in global warming.

The projection, which will continue every night until the COP26 summit due to take place in November, was launched ahead of World Environment Day on 5 June. It will become part of a network of other projects worldwide.

Head of Sustainability, Gavin Slater said: "The Climate Clock is a collaboration between youth climate activists and the council.

"The clock acts as a global reminder of the commitments made in the Paris agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It also draws attention to the increasing urgency needed to tackle the climate crisis in the run-up to the COP26 summit being held in Glasgow.

"I'm pleased that Glasgow has been chosen as the Climate Clock's next location as we join a host of cities with similar initiatives from across the world including New York, Berlin and Seoul."

Gavin added: "My thanks to Sonia Milne and Paola Pasino in NRS who have worked tirelessly over the last few months to make this project a success."

7 June - Did you see these campaigns?

Road Policing Unit

Our Road Safety Unit in Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability worked in partnership with Police Scotland to launch two safety campaigns across the city during March and April.

Using a diverse mix of outdoor advertising channels, the 'Go-safe at Junctions' and 'Think Bike' campaigns aimed to encourage safer road use and help protect our vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

George Cairns, Road Safety Development Officerin NRS said: "With figures for Glasgow showing that 65% of all driver and passenger casualties and 67% of motorcycling casualties occur at junctions we wanted to help raise awareness, amongst our citizens and visitors to the city, to be extra vigilant and mindful of how to carefully enter and exit a junction - to keep everyone safe.

"Working with our partners at Police Scotland and our Corporate Graphics Team we created key information banners to be used across various advertising locations including buses, billboards, radio, press and in areas within our council carparks. We included an important reminder for drivers that the Highway Code states that when negotiating a junction, they must give way to pedestrians who have begun to cross on the road into which they are turning. In addition to this we wanted to encourage all drivers to look once, look twice and THINK BIKE at junctions.

"We are really pleased with how successful these two campaigns were and just how many people we managed to reach with our key messages during the three weeks the campaigns were live - it was a staggering amount!"

Impacts

Road safe

An 'impact' is a measurement of success for an advert based on its reach and frequency - for example, how many people could have seen or heard it and how many times.

Using a combination of advertising channels to get maximum exposure it is estimated that these key messages were read on the various outdoor advertising locations had nearly 5 million impacts (4,835,568)* and were heard on Radio Clyde by over 750k people, multiple times, which again is nearly 5 million impacts (4,822.953) *.

7 June - Carers Give Betty a Birthday Surprise

Home carers Gill Malley and Natalie Sherlock pictured either side of Betty

Home carers gave service user Betty a birthday surprise by decorating her living room with balloons and banners to help celebrate her 90th birthday.

Home carer Gill Malley said "We all enjoy caring for Betty she is so outgoing and lively, you wouldn't believe she was 90!

"Myself and home carer Natalie Sherlock did her tuck call the night before her birthday, which involves helping her into bed. We then told her we were going to polish her furniture, but we actually decorated her living room with balloons and banners so that she woke up to a lovely birthday surprise the next day.

"Along with her other home carers Josie Smith and Roberta Reid we also got her a present, which she was overwhelmed with. We were just so pleased to be able to help celebrate her birthday and put a smile on her face after what has been a difficult past year for all of our service users."

Betty's son Colin said "Mum really loves her visits from her carers, they give her some company and she enjoys finding out local news from them -it keeps her feeling like a part of the community. We really appreciate the effort they went to for her birthday, she had a wonderful day and enjoyed visits from the family...including 'Blue' the springer spaniel who turned 15 on the same day!"
