Glasgow welcomes new students - find information about council services relevant to you

The start of the academic year can be an overwhelming time for students moving into a new city. We have created an information page detailing all relevant Glasgow City Council services contact information which you may find useful.

Council Tax

You may have already received a letter in the post to pay you council tax - do not worry. Follow the advice and guidance linked below to learn if you are entitled to a Discount or Exemption for Council Tax. 

Please note discounts/exemptions are not automatically applied when you become a student.

Parking Permits

We appreciate that many students have cars. Some properties may offer private car parks, but if not you have the right to apply for a parking permit so that you can park on the street near your new flat.

Check what type of parking applies to you and apply for a parking permit here.

Bins

Unsure of your bin collection date or what can go in which bin? Bin collection days vary across the city. Find out more information regarding bins and recycling here.

Got something too big? There are Household Recycling Centres you can take items to, but you can also book a Bulky Waste Collection here.
