On 1 March 2024 a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for single-use drinks containers will be introduced across Scotland. The introduction of a DRS is one of several national policy changes which will impact the Resource and Recycling sector and will impact the collection and management of glass bottles, drinks cans and PET plastic bottles.
Hospitality businesses, like restaurants, bars, cafes and hotels sell millions of bottles and cans each year and these businesses will have a key role to play.
Further information for retailers and the hospitality sectors on the DRS is provided on the Zero Waste Scotland, Circularity Scotland, and Scottish Environment Protection Agency websites. Please see the links below.
Changes to the Council's commercial collection services for these material streams may also be impacted as the DRS is introduced and the quantity of the target materials (plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles) reduces within the dry mixed recycling service and glass collection services.
