7 September 2022 - Know Your Numbers Week, 5 to 11 September 2022

Blood Pressure

This week is 'Know your numbers week' - an event held every year to encourage blood pressure testing and awareness to all.

High blood pressure rarely has any noticeable symptoms but if left untreated, it increases the risk of serious problems such as heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, kidney disease, and can put strain on other organs such as the brain and eyes.

This year, the theme of the campaign is Measure. Modify. Manage: Measure your blood pressure to see if it is under control; Modify your lifestyle if necessary; and Manage your blood pressure and your health to beat 'the silent killer.'

Do you know your risks of high blood pressure numbers? The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have a check.  We want to encourage ALL of you, and your family, to check your blood pressures, so if detected, it can be easily treated.

Home blood pressure monitoring is an effective and inexpensive way to keep blood pressure under control. Find Blood Pressure UK's online measuring your blood at home resource hub here.

7 September 2022 - Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September 2022

Suicide Prevention Day 2022

Suicide is a global concern with around 703,000 people dying by suicide every year and could affect every one of us.  However, suicides are preventable.

World Suicide Prevention Day is held every year on 10 September to help raise awareness, reduce the stigma and promote preventative measures with the aim to reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts.

This year, the theme is 'Creating Hope Through Action' - in the hope to inspire confidence and light in us all to act, through reaching to a person who may be struggling. The World Suicide Prevention Day Awareness film promotes this current year's theme to help us understand.

Get Involved

The International Association for Suicide Prevention encourages you to light a candle near your window at 8pm on Saturday 10 September.  This will help show your support for suicide prevention, to remember a lost loved one and for the survivors of suicide

Glasgow City Council is in the process of producing the CCTP which will replace the current City Centre Transport Strategy 2014 to 2024 and provide a clear framework for transport decision-making in Glasgow City Centre and make it a place where everyone can thrive.

There will now be a seven-week public consultation on the draft CCTP. This will comprise a series of virtual workshops with stakeholders on several themes.

An online survey is live until noon on Monday 12 September 2022. It can be accessed at: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/city-centre-transformation-plan. The draft CCTP and associated documents, including translated versions, can also be viewed here.

Feedback

HSCP are seeking your views and comments on their first Draft Domestic Abuse Strategic Plan.

The Strategic Plan pledges to improve our services to people who are or have been affected by domestic abuse, and to improve our response to people who cause harm through domestic abuse.

The Draft Domestic Abuse Strategic Plan describes what GCHSCP will do over the next 3 years to make sure people affected by domestic abuse receive the best possible care and explains what will be put in place to make sure our staff are able to achieve this. It also outlines how we will improve the way we work with our partners and how we will continue to seek the involvement of people with lived experience in the design and evaluation of domestic abuse services.

Have your say

You have until Friday 14 October to give your views on the Strategic Plan by completing the survey here.

7 September 2022 - Join us: Glasgow Girl to Glasgow City Councillor -  BME Network Event

We welcome Baillie Rosa Salih- Scotland's First Ever Refugee Councillor as key note speaker to our Next BME Network event on 4 October from 2 - 3.30pm

Come along and hear from Rosa of her experiences, the challenges she faced and how she overcame them - from a Glasgow Girl to Glasgow City Councillor!

Baillie Roza Salih arrived in Scotland as a young girl when her family were forced to flee Iraq. Her first steps into campaigning was whilst she was at Drumchapel High School where she along with a small group of fellow pupils came together to protest at the detention of an asylum seeking friend.

From a school petition, the Glasgow Girls campaign grew and soon attracted national attention, the campaign was made into both a theatre and television production highlighting wider concerns about the treatment of asylum seekers.  Roza graduated with an Honours Degree in Law and Politics and was the President for Diversity and Advocacy for the Students Association, elected to the National Union of Students (NUS) International Students Committee and the NUS UK Student trustee board.  She was elected as a Councillor to represent Greater Pollok at the recent Local Government Elections.

7 September 2022 - Equally Safe at Work Programme Survey

Equally Safe logo

We are pleased to announce that teh council is participating in the Equally Safe at Work accreditation programme. We are committed to progressing gender equality in the workplace, and this programme provides the tools to take this forward to help make meaningful change within the council.

Over the coming months we will be undertaking a number of activities to progress gender equality and better support victim-survivors of violence against women. Gender equality is good for everyone and we all have a role to play in creating an inclusive and supportive workplace, to ensure men and women have equal opportunities and outcomes and that all employees are treated fairly.

Gender-based violence is violence directed against someone on the basis of their gender. 'Violence against women' and 'gender-based violence' are often used interchangeably as most gender-based violence is inflicted by men on women and girls.  However, it's important to recognise that most men don't commit acts of gender-based violence and that men can also be victims.

Have your say

We'd like to invite you to share your views by completing a survey here.  The survey will take around 15 minutes to complete. It is completely anonymous and will be collated by our Equally Safe at Work partner organisation, Close the Gap.
