2021 Updates

17 December 2021 - equal pay claims update

The council is committed to resolving the issue of equal pay and dealing with equal pay claims, making sure that everyone who works for the council is paid equally for equal work.

We are also committed to keeping everyone updated about the status of discussions between council officers and claimants' representatives, including our trade unions.

Since early December, each party's legal representatives have been meeting with the aim of agreeing an approach for new claims. We also expect the Employment Tribunal process to continue in the New Year in the event that negotiations do not resolve all issues between us.

Progress has also been made with Strathclyde Pension Fund on adjusting pensions to reflect previous equal pay settlements.

The first group of former employees will receive their adjusted pension payments from 15 February 2022 - and this will be followed by a rolling programme, which will see more claimants receive their adjusted pension every month.

If your pension is due to change, we will work with your representatives so that you get advance notice of the date from which you can expect the adjusted pension to be paid.

We will continue to update you on any further discussions, as and when they take place. All updates will be published on this page.

20 September 2021 - equal pay claims update

The council is committed to resolving the issue of equal pay and dealing with equal pay claims, making sure that everyone who works for the council is paid equally for equal work.

We are also committed to keeping everyone updated about these matters following the regular meetings that take place between senior council officers and claimants' representatives, including our trade unions.

Council officers met with the claimants' representatives on Wednesday, 29 September.

Ahead of that meeting, the council provided further detail on certain categories of new claims where it is willing to make offers to postholders on the same basis as those who received settlements in 2019. Unfortunately, those representing claimants at the meeting have said they are not prepared to engage with the council to make those offers to staff.

The council also provided detail on other claims where it is not currently satisfied offers can be justified. Whilst those representing the claimants have agreed to withdraw some claims which it agrees have no merit, there are a large number of other posts which remain in dispute. Unfortunately the claimants' representatives have declined to provide data they have told officers justifies some or all of these disputed claims.

The council remains ready and willing to make in-principle offers in relation to a sizeable number of posts, and to carefully consider any evidence relating to other posts, if representatives are prepared to provide it. Whilst our preference is to progress these matters cooperatively, we will consider how best to do so if that cooperation is not forthcoming.

We will continue to update you on any further discussions, as and when they take place. All updates will be published on this page at www.glasgow.gov.uk/staffupdates - equal pay, latest news.

2 September 2021 - equal pay claims update

The council is committed to resolving the issue of equal pay and dealing with equal pay claims, making sure that everyone who works for the council is paid equally for equal work.

We are also committed to keeping everyone updated about these matters following the regular meetings between senior council officers and claimants' representatives, including our trade unions.

Council officers met with the claimants' representatives on Wednesday, 1 September. During that meeting, we were able to set out for the first time the council's in-principle position in relation to certain categories of new claims.

We will continue to update you on those discussions as they progress. All updates will be published on this page at www.glasgow.gov.uk/staffupdates - equal pay, latest news.

Update from our Chief Executive, Annemarie O'Donnell. August 25 2021

I want to give you an update about the council's commitment to resolving equal pay claims.

You may recall from previous communications that agreement was reached with all parties involved on how to settle equal pay claims up to 2018. Payments to claimants were made following approval of the funding at the City Administration Committee in February 2019.

Some claimants were also due payments towards pensions and the calculations and settlements for pensions are still ongoing due to the complexity of the process. I can assure you that this remains a priority for the council and the process is being worked on by council officers.

As you know we are in the process of implementing a new pay and grading scheme and until that scheme is implemented, we will continue to deal with the issue of equal pay claims.

This involves negotiations between the council and claimants' representatives which includes our trade unions, on how to settle any new claims and the ongoing claims from 2018 and until a new scheme is in place.

Senior council officers are now meeting claimants' representatives and trade unions fortnightly to agree how to settle new and outstanding claims.

We will continue to keep everyone updated on this matter including committee decisions required to approve the process and payments to claimants.
