Working in Residential Care - Older People

Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) provides residential care and support in a homely environment to older people across the city.

Services mostly support adults, but you could become involved in supporting younger people too.

Working for us

Working with older adults is a rewarding job and can offer great flexibility.

Rotas within the establishments cover 7 days therefore you must be available to cover the full roster requirements. We have a varied range of shift patterns available.

Applicants will be expected to cover citywide to support demands of the service, when required.

Upon recruitment we will carry out a Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme record check and you will be required to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) within 6 months of starting your post. As a registered professional, there is a requirement that you obtain the appropriate qualification for the role e.g. SVQ 2 in Health and Social Care, within a set timescale.

You are required to have some previous formal or lived experience of supporting vulnerable adults / older people either in a professional or personal capacity.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Social Care Assistant

You will be expected to:

  • show commitment to the wellbeing of people who use our care and support service
  • engage with and listen to the people you support to find out what matters to them enabling us to provide a service that is person centred
  • deliver high quality care and support in line with the Health & Social Care Standards
  • assist people in a way that they choose which maintains their individuality, dignity and independence. You may be required to:
    • assist sensitively with personal hygiene
    • administer medication safely
    • support participation in recreational activities according to interests and preferences
    • assist with eating and drinking when and where the individual chooses
    • provide compassionate emotional support when times are difficult
    • provide moving and handling support that is safe and appropriate for the person
    • seek assistance from Health Care Professionals when asked or have concerns about a person's wellbeing.

Working in Social Care can make a difference to your life by caring for someone else's. This work is about helping people to live well and achieve the things in life that really matter to them. You'll go home each day knowing you made a difference.
