Glasgow's Low Emission Zone - Residents' Grace Period Application

LEZ Residents' Grace Period Application

Glasgow's city centre Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will come into force on 1 June 2023.

A grace period however means that zone residents have extra time to comply.

For vehicles registered to a residential property within the zone area, LEZ enforcement will not start until 1 June 2024.

Some residential properties just outside the LEZ boundary may also benefit from the residents' grace period - with properties situated within the undernoted controlled parking zones also eligible:

  • City Centre Inner
  • City Centre Outer (excluding sections to the west of the M8 or to the south of the River Clyde)
  • Garnethill
  • Necropolis
  • Barras North
  • Barras South

You can click on this link for details of the controlled parking zones.

A full list of streets/roads eligible for the residents' grace period can be viewed by clicking on this link to the pdf icon LEZ Residents' Road Register [133kb].

Next Steps:

Zone residents who require the benefit of the grace period are required to make an application to the council. It will not be automatically applied.

IMPORTANT - There is no need to make an application if any of the following applies:

  • You have a resident parking permit for one of the above noted controlled parking zones (as of 1 April 2023).
  • Your vehicle already meets LEZ emissions standards - use the Transport Scotland's online registration checker to be certain.
  • Vehicles for disabled persons are exempt. To see if your vehicle qualifies for this automatic exemption, and to access the application portal for Blue Badge holders who require exemptions, you can click on this link.

If you do need to apply for a residents' grace period, you should do so as soon as possible.  Applications can only be considered however, if all the following conditions are met:

  • Your vehicle does not meet LEZ emission standards.
  • Your address is a residential property, and it falls within the LEZ or adjacent area covered by the above noted controlled parking zones.
  • Your vehicle is registered to a residential address within the relevant area - evidence from your logbook (V5C) is required.

The residents' grace period will expire on 31 May 2024. Any entry to Glasgow's LEZ following this date by a vehicle which does not meet the LEZ emission standards, will be subject to a penalty charge.
