Violence Against Women and Girls

We believe that all forms of violence against women and girls are wrong and they are damaging. Violence against women and girls is a societal problem, experienced by individual women and girls.

Violence against women and girls is a global issue and one that we all have a part to play in finding the right solutions to ensure safety and wellbeing for everyone who lives, works or visits the city. We are committed to, and working towards taking all necessary steps to prevent and eradicate all forms of violence against women and girls.

This is a significant safety issue for women and girls in our city and we are committed to working towards taking all necessary steps to prevent and eradicate all forms of violence against women and girls in this city.

Violence against women and girls is both a cause and a consequence of inequalities between men and women. By taking steps forward to tackling gender inequality an achieved quality of life can be improved for both men and women by:

  • An equal distribution of work, caring and leisure activities between men and women throughout the life course;
  • Educating boys and girls to understand and avoid gender stereotyping;
  • Combating gender discrimination in all aspects of life including: jobs, pay, education and access to health care; and
  • Mainstreaming 'gender analysis' in all areas of healthy ageing

One in 4 women/girls in Scotland will experience at least one form of gender based violence across their lifetime.

Glasgow is recognised as spearheading innovative and creative responses to challenging all forms of violence against women and girls. In the city we have services that can respond to a wide range of needs identified by survivors of gender based violence. These services work across all forms of violence against women and girls.
