Submission Documents: By Councillor David McDonald:- "Council condemns the continuing inhumane treatment of asylum seekers by the Westminster Government and notes that Glasgow has been proud to welcome and shelter tens of thousands of refugees over many years. Council notes the landmark judgement by the English High Court on 9th April that current rates of asylum support are inadequate to meet asylum seekers' essential needs. Council remains outraged at the degrading treatment of asylum seekers in Glasgow, and elsewhere, through the application of punitive policies set by UK government departments on issues such as employment, housing, benefits and welfare. Council recognises that the best option for the development of policies to ensure the humane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in our city is for decisions on immigration and asylum to be taken in Scotland, reflecting the needs of our society and the welcoming outlook of our people. Recognising that control of asylum policy currently remains with Westminster, however, Council instructs the Chief Executive to write to the UK Home Secretary, Theresa May MP, requesting that a full year review of UK asylum policy is undertaken, in order to allow Council officers to work with asylum-seeking residents of Glasgow to enable them to live with dignity, support themselves and their families, and participate fully in their new communities."
