Submission Documents: By Councillor Feargal Dalton:- "Next year will see the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, a watershed moment in that country's history that ultimately led to the establishment of an independent Irish state. Many Irish Scots, such as Coatbridge-born Margaret Skinnider, Edinburgh-born James Connolly and many others, from around Scotland and here in Glasgow, played a pivotal role in the Easter Rising and the subsequent War of Independence. This Council welcomes the launch earlier this year in the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh of the 1916 Rising Centenary Committee - Scotland. It acknowledges that this committee and its endeavours emcompasses a wide array of Irish and Scottish community interests, relatives of the participants in the Easter Rising, cultural, heritage and sports organisations, academics, representatives from the arts, the trade union movement, the Scottish and Irish Governments and politicians from different parties in Scotland, and looks forward to the events planned to commerorate the centenary. Council therefore calls on the Chief Executive to write to the Irish Consul in Scotland to welcome the work of the Committee and to offer any and all assistance for centenary commemorations."
