Building Standards and Public Safety

Our Service

Building Standards and Public Safety has the following responsibilities:

  • to secure the health, safety, welfare and convenience of persons in and about buildings and others who may be affected by buildings or matters connected with buildings;
  • to further the conservation of fuel and power; and
  • to further the achievement of sustainable development.
  • Ancillary functions such as Street Naming and Numbering within the City.

The Building Regulations are mandatory, but the choice of how to comply with them lies with the building owner.

If the guidance in the Technical Handbooks is followed in full then this should indicate that the building regulations have been complied with.

Public Safety

We also have input to the Licensing Board, the Licensing Committee, Safety at Sports Grounds, Raised Structures and Events.

Advice

Early consultation with the Service on any of these matters is recommended as this can reduce possible difficulties later in the processes.
