1 February 2023 - It's more than just one day: join in with Time to Talk!

Time to Talk Day 2023 banner

Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Being able to normalise conversations about how we are feeling and chat openly about it, can empower others to start talking and seek the support they need.

Around one in four of us will experience mental health problems at some point in our lives (Public Health Scotland) - yet people are still afraid to talk about it and this can be one of the worst parts of the illness.

The national Time to Talk Day aims to inspire us all to start talking about our mental health and help to break down stereotypes, improve relationships, aid recovery and take the stigma out of something that affects us all.

Let's get talking!

So, this Thursday 2 February 'Time to Talk' Day is the perfect opportunity to get started - to chat openly and informally in the workplace about our mental health.

We encourage you to spark conversations with a colleague and take some time to grab a cuppa and chat about your mental health and how we you are feeling. And remember, it's not just about one day. It really doesn't take much to show someone you are willing to listen - so why not try catching up for the whole week and start a trend to make it a regular occurrence.

Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed about and neither is talking about it. One of the best ways to start the healing process is to share how you are feeling and seek support from someone. It really does help and can a positive impact on your work environment.

As Lynn Norwood, Head of Human Resources explains: "Tackling mental health stigma is crucial to improving staff wellbeing and to overcoming the barriers stigma presents for prevention, early intervention and recovery.

"As an official workplace partner of See Me, we're supporting this years' Time to Talk by running our own successful extended week-long council-wide campaign.

"I'd urge everyone across the council to take time out during the week to have a cuppa and a chat about mental health with a colleague. Together, we can create a supportive workplace where we can all talk openly about mental health and feel empowered to seek help when we need it".

1 February 2023 - Free courses: learn Gaelic for World Gaelic Week

Staff across the council family are invited to sign up for Gaelic classes for the start of World Gaelic Week (February 20-26) - a celebration of Gaelic across the globe.

Donald MacPhee, Gaelic Development Officer, said: "This is a great time to learn a new language. People often tell me they'd love to speak Gaelic. Well, here's your chance!

"We all know Gaelic was the language of many of Scotland's traditional songs and books but it is also still alive in music and song, in Scotland's food and drink, across our land and place-names, and in our schools, on tv, radio and film. It's a language that's open to anyone to use, today or in the future.

"Learning Gaelic is an ideal way to start 2023. Do that and get involved in a language community that's been around for more than a thousand years. Help sustain its growth and popularity for another thousand.

"It's always good to celebrate our success and we do that well. Our fourth Gaelic Language Plan for 2023 to 2028 was endorsed by the City Administration just before Christmas. That Plan is currently with Bòrd na Gàidhlig and we hope to get approval to publish it by the summer."

Free courses

We have worked with Fèisean nan Gàidheal over many years. They have an excellent reputation for high quality Gaelic learning for young people and adults.

Thanks to the generous support of Bòrd na Gàidhlig, this block of classes is free to all staff across the council family. They will be delivered online, over a six-week period, starting mid-February and running until late March.

1 February 2023 - We'd like to know what you think...

Public consultation on the final four District Regeneration Frameworks (DRFs) for the city centre districts (Cowcaddens, the Learning Quarter, the Merchant City and Townhead) will began on 20 January and continues until 3 March.

Our City Centre Strategy identified nine City Centre Districts and commissioned design teams to bring forward evidence-based Regeneration Frameworks for each. The frameworks we are currently consulting on are the last four to be completed. In developing these we have engaged with about 5,000 people and talked with about 450.

As part of the consultation you are able to give your opinion on the themes, projects that have been prioritised. You can give us your feedback on any or all of the frameworks under consultation. When asked, simply tick the ones you would like to take part in. Your feedback will be considered when the final action plan is approved.
