Briefing 16: Census 2022 Data
Overview
The first details of the 2022 Census were released today, 14th September 2023, with information on local authority populations and rounded age estimates.
Glasgow's population is estimated at 620,700 which represents an increase of 27,455 from the 2011 census total of 593,245; 4.6% higher compared to a 2.7% increase in Scotland overall.
Population Increase/Decrease
Of the 32 local authorities in Scotland, 7 experienced population decline, 11 remained essentially the same (+1% or -1%), and 14 showed an increase.
The areas showing a decline are:
- Argyll and Bute
- Dumfries and Galloway
- East Ayrshire
- Inverclyde
- Na h-Eileanan Siar
- North Ayrshire and
- West Dunbartonshire
Aging Population
National Records of Scotland are highlighting that the data shows an increasingly ageing population in Scotland. However this is not so much the case in urban areas, and as shown in Glasgow by the following table.

Between 2011 and 2022 while the 65-74 population showed an increase of 7,990, there was a decrease of 3,055 in the 75+ age group. The main driver of the population increase was the 25-44 age group, which increased by 13,390 or by 7.3%.
The reduction in the 0-14 population reflects the fall in the annual number of births, which has been a Scotland-wide phenomenon.
The table uses the local authority definition of Glasgow, and for 1981 and 1991 uses the current postcode sector definition of Glasgow to take into account the boundary changes from the 1996 local government reorganisation.
It should be noted that the 2022 data has been rounded and the actual number might be slightly different.
Glasgow and Surrounding Local Authorities
The difference between the 2022 age composition between Glasgow and the surrounding local authorities is shown in the following table.
Of note is the difference in the proportions in the 15-24 and 25-44 age groups, and the consequences this may have on the labour supply and on potential future employment rates.
