Glasgow City Council

Mykolaiv, Ukraine

Glasgow twinned with Mykolaiv in February this year. Mykolaiv is a city in the South of Ukraine and provides Ukraine with access to the Black Sea. It holds the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine.

This twinning agreement comes as a show of solidarity and support to the people of Ukraine and was announced to the public on 24th February 2024, which coincides with the second anniversary of the invasion. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Cllr Jacqueline McLaren, the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Susan Aitken and Mykolaiv's City Mayor, Oleksandr Syenkevych. The online ceremony was held on Tuesday 6 February 2024.

Mykolaiv was chosen following advice from representatives of The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), who considered the City a "good fit" for Glasgow due to its similarities. Both cities are major shipbuilding centres and important river ports. Likewise, they are prominent commercial, industrial and economic hubs.

This agreement will be a platform for knowledge sharing, cooperation and friendship between Glasgow and Mykolaiv and their citizens and we look forward to strengthening these ties and keep exploring new areas for collaboration.
