Concept designs provide view of four Liveable Neighbourhoods

Concept designs influenced by residents that show how four city neighbourhoods could look in the future have been revealed.

The illustrations included in the second tranche of Liveable Neighbourhoods progress reports for the Yoker to Whiteinch, Royston to Hogganfield, Mansewood to Shawlands and Pollokshields East to Gorbals areas, follows community engagement to identify local improvement ideas.

Formed from a shortlist of potential interventions, the concept designs bring to life projects that reduce car dependency and encourage greater footfall to local shops and businesses. By transforming streets into safer, more attractive spaces, daily needs can be met locally and people travelling actively and by public transport are prioritised.

Highlights include a more people-friendly Victoria Park Drive South which incorporates a redesign of the junction with Dumbarton Road to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier. And in Royston, concept designs show how an improved walking route would better connect with Alexandra Parade and integrate with future plans to deliver cycling infrastructure. 

South of the river, concept designs illustrate a more pedestrian-friendly environment around the shops and services at Nithsdale Road and Kildrostan St that serve Pollokshields. And, for those seeking to travel actively to Crown Street Retail Park from the Gorbals, Govanhill and beyond, the designs show marked improvements to both safety and directness.

Covering every area of the city through six tranches of work, these community-driven plans identify local projects to create more people-friendly streets. Some Liveable Neighbourhood plans will also, subject to funding, link in with area-wide active travel schemes such as Glasgow's City Network which will add almost 270km of safer, segregated routes for walking, wheeling and cycling.

Connecting Communities grant funding from Sustrans Scotland Places for Everyone programme has funded early development work for this second tranche of Liveable Neighbourhoods.

All projects highlighted in the reports provide a valuable overview of initiatives that can be prioritised and progressed to construction subject to future funding.

Three of the emerging projects have been put forward for Sustrans Places for Everyone funding that would see designs developed to technical stage, with a funding decision expected in late summer.:

• Mansewood to Shawlands LN - Transforming Kildrostan Triangle
• Yoker to Whiteinch LN - Jordanhill School streetscape and active travel link

And the Place Based Investment Programme 2023/24 has also supported a number of Liveable Neighbourhood projects to deliver concept or technical designs, with work to be completed later this month:

• Royston to Hogganfield LN - Maxwelton Road to Provan Road (improving walking and cycling between Blackhill and Riddrie areas)
• Mansewood to Shawlands LN - Shawlands and Strathbungo Accessibility Strategy: Dinmont Road enhancements
• Pollokshields East to Gorbals LN - Govanhill/Gorbals pedestrian priority junction upgrade (Cathcart Road)

A portion of the Place Fund budget (from the Scottish Governments Place Based Investment Programme) for Glasgow is to be reserved for the Liveable Neighbourhood programme in future financial years. This will immediately progress a number of projects that have emerged from Liveable Neighbourhoods tranches 1 and 2 to construction, as set out in the Place Fund paper presented to City Administration Committee 30 Nov 2023.
