Submission Documents: By Councillor Ade Aibinu:- "This Council expresses alarm at the rise in anti-Semitism in recent years across the UK. This includes incidents when criticism of Israel has been expressed using anti-Semitic tropes. Criticism of Israel can be legitimate, but not if it employs the tropes and imagery of anti-Semitism. Council therefore welcomes the UK Government's announcement on 11th December 2016 that it will sign up to the internationally recognised International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) guidelines on anti-Semitism which define anti-Semitism thus: 'Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.' This Council calls on all political parties to support combating anti-Semitism in all its manifestations. Council notes that Jeremy Corbyn, the Leader of the Labour Party, has said sorry for 'pockets of anti-Semitism' in the Labour Party; the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council have, in an open letter, stated that there has been a 'repeated institutional failure' to properly address anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. Council is concerned by the recent media reports that pro-Israeli groups were stopped from taking part in a recent anti-racism march held in Glasgow. Reports include anti-Israel protestors in masks intimidating pro-Israeli marchers. Council agrees that there is no place for this intimidation and calls on the organisers of the march to condemn the protestors, and in future everyone is welcomed at similar anti-racism events. Racism and anti-Semitism in all its forms is unacceptable. This Council hereby adopts the above definition of anti-Semitism as set out by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and pledges to combat this pernicious form of racism." Help Icon
