Initially in September 1914 Ewen enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders. In April 1915 he received a commission in the Gordon Highlanders. Attached to the 10th London Regiment he served in Palestine and took part in the fighting at Gaza. On his transfer to the Royal Air Force, he saw further service in Egypt. Later, he returned to England where he acted as an instructor. On 9 November 1918 he died of malaria and pneumonia in the Military Hospital, Lincoln.

Ewen was the son Mr James Mackenzie and Mrs Mackenzie who resided at 1 Buckingham Terrace, Govan, Glasgow. At Bellahouston Academy he was a very distinguished athlete and was school champion in 1907. He excelled in running and jumping, was goalkeeper at school and football teams for several years. He became a teacher and before entering the army was on the staff of Fairfield Public School. Lieutenant Mackenzie was offered complete discharge with pension on five different occasions between 1916 and 1918. He never took up these options.
