East City Way

Glasgow's "City Ways", as part of the Glasgow Active Travel Strategy, are routes which radiate from the city centre and provide key walking and cycling corridors to encourage and provide sustainable transport opportunities. When completed the East City Way will provide a continuous and segregated cycle route linking the existing routes from Bridgeton to Daldowie Road near the Glasgow boundary.

Since the completion of Phase 1 at Mount Vernon, construction of Phases 6 and 7 has commenced and will be completed by Summer 2023 to coincide with the Cycling World Championships. It is proposed to connect the new infrastructure to the existing bi-directional cycle lanes west of Fielden Street eastwards, and ending at Canmore Street.

The proposals include connecting the existing bi-directional cycle lanes to a kerb segregated "with flow" cycle lanes on the north and south kerbline of London Road. These measures will replace the current Spaces for People soft segregation along this stretch of London Road.

Junctions along these phases will also be upgraded to benefit both pedestrians and cyclists. Some aspects of the junction improvement will include:

• Automatic detectors for cyclists to allow for safe passage through junctions
• Cyclists given priority over motor vehicles during each green phase
• Protected junction at Clyde Gateway
• Improved pedestrian signals and footways

This project is in line with Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council objectives to encourage cycling and use of sustainable transport, which is within the Glasgow Active Travel Strategy.

East City Way - Phase 6 and 7 Consultation

Over the summer Glasgow City Council held a period of consultation for the East City Way.

Thank you to all that took the time to complete our survey and provide us with valuable feedback.

Based on all comments received, GCC Officers have reviewed and amended our final designs. Details of this can be found in the ECW  6 and 7 Engagement Report July 2022 below.
