Parking and Storage
Access to safe, secure cycle storage at street level, ensures that cycling is more accessible and appealing for people.
With our partners Cyclehoop, we provide residential cycle storage and short-term cycle parking for those visiting our city centre.
Residential Cycle Storage Shelters

People living in older flats are often deterred from using a bike regularly due to a lack of storage space within their homes, while fire regulations can prevent bikes from being stored in stairwells. Bike theft from stairwells can also be an issue.
Following a successful trial in 2021, our residential on-street cycle storage scheme currently provides over 1,200 storage spaces through 206 units across Glasgow.
The shelters are provided by Cyclehoop who supply, install, manage, and maintain the shelters on behalf of the Council. To find a shelter location near you and rent a space visit Cyclehoop's website.
A space in a cycle shelter costs £84 per year or £7 per month. This rental fee pays for the ongoing management and maintenance of the shelters
Scheme Expansion
Since launch, there has been a considerable demand for cycle storage. Working with our partners Cyclehoop, we are committed to expanding the scheme and we expect new shelters to appear on-street from June 2025 - with 120 new shelters due to be installed by November 2025.
To learn where the new shelters are proposed and how locations were determined, visit Glasgow City Council's Secure On-Street Cycle Storage StoryMap.
To inform where future shelters are located, you can make a location request on Cyclehoop's 'Suggest a Location' webpage.
Short Stay Cycle Shelters
We provide temporary secure on-street cycle parking for visitors to Glasgow city centre.
The scheme is provided by Cyclehoop who supply, install, manage, and maintain the shelters on behalf of the Council. The Pilot Project has been developed in response to a lack of secure cycle parking in the city centre.
It costs 15p to rent a space for 30 mins in a shelter. To get started, please visit Cyclehoop's website and download the Cyclehoop app.
Download the app for free from Google Play or the App Store, create your account and then add credit. You can then use the app to find, navigate, book and unlock a cycle parking unit of your choice.
Twenty short-stay cycle shelters are located in or near the city centre and are easily identifiable with a bike icon on either end. The shelters are black and feature the UCI rainbow stripes in celebration of Glasgow hosting the UCI World Championships in 2023.
For people with non-standard cycles, a cargo bike shelter is located on the east side of Glasgow Central railway station on Union Street. The cycle parking facilities are positioned at street level for ease of access.
Keeping your Cycle Safe
If you see any suspicious activity, someone cutting or attempting to break a lock, or need to report a theft, call Police Scotland on 101.
Police Scotland also provide helpful advice on how to protect your bike which you can read about here.
Our Transport Strategy

Policy 50 of Glasgow's Transport Strategy includes a commitment that we will work to ensure that new sustainable transport initiatives do not take up pavement space where possible, do not create new hazards for pedestrians or those with mobility difficulties, and that road space reallocation is considered first and foremost, where possible.
Most of our cycle shelters are positioned on the road as our Transport Strategy encourages and displace car parking spaces by approximately half a car length. The placement of shelters is designed to minimise their visual impact and avoid obstructing visibility or creating blind spots for pedestrians. Where necessary, the shelters are positioned on the footway without impeding those who are walking or wheeling.
